National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program - High Plains Regional Groundwater (HPGW) Study

>Major Aquifer Study - Ogallala Formation, central High Plains

In 1999, water samples from 74 randomly selected domestic water-supply wells completed in the Ogallala Formation of the central High Plains area.

  • The samples were analyzed for about 170 water-quality constituents including:
    • physical parameters
    • dissolved solids and major ions
    • nutrients and dissolved organic carbon
    • trace elements
    • pesticides
    • volatile organic compounds
    • radon.
  • The purpose of this study was to provide a broad overview of groundwater quality in the major hydrogeologic subunit of the High Plains aquifer (U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report, 02-4112).
  • In 2010, a subset of the 74 wells (30 wells) were resampled to determine how water quality has changed between 1999 and 2010.
