What is the Tracer Gage?

    • It is an automated method for measuring streamflow in ice covered streams
    • Streamflow is calculated based on the amount of dilution of a tracer that is injected into the stream
    • Streamflow is measured three times per day
    • It was developed by USGS scientists to measure streamflow in Colorado during winter, when streamflow reported from standard stream gages may be incorrect due to presence of ice in the stream channel
    • Funding for development provided by the Colorado Water Conservation Board and USGS
