Shattuck Superfund Site Study Area: Denver, Colorado BACKGROUND:The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing technical assistance to the Denver Radium Site Operable Unit 8, hereinafter referred to as the "Shattuck Superfund site." The Shattuck Superfund site has been remediated by on-site entombment; that is, by mixing 50,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil with fly ash and cement and placing it in the ground at a depth that is above the water table. The primary contaminants of concern are uranium, radium, and heavy metals. The current remedy has been characterized as inadequate by local residents and the City of Denver. The USGS has been asked to provide an unbiased technical review of the monitoring well network to determine if it is adequate to monitor the status of the remedy, and to characterize the contaminated ground-water plumes that are associated with the site.
