Stormwater Runoff Monitoring

Study Area: Denver Metropolitan Area, Colorado
Period of Project: Project records beginning in October 1998 - present
Project Number: CO322
Project Chief: Kip Bossong
Cooperator: Urban Drainage and Flood Control District

BACKGROUND:

The Colorado Water-Quality Control Division issues municipal stormwater permits to the cities of Denver, Aurora, and Lakewood for water quality in segments 14 and 15 of the South Platte River. Part of the permits require the development of an urban runoff monitoring program that addresses total maximum daily load (TMDL) issues. The Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD) prepared the monitoring plan and the USGS implements the plan.

USGS collects samples of urban stormwater runoff at five sites in the study area. All five sites have records of discharge compiled by either USGS, The Colorado State Engineers Office, or UDFCD. Samples from at least 4 to as many as 15 storms per year are collected and analyzed for hardness, total suspended solids, nutrients, and selected total and dissolved metals.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To collect water-quality samples of urban stormwater runoff at 5 sites including:
    1. South Platte River below Union Ave., at Englewood CO. (06710247)
    2. South Platte River at Denver, CO. (06714000)
    3. South Platte River at Henderson, CO. (06720500)
    4. Tollgate Creek above 6th Ave. at Aurora, CO. (394329104490101)
    5. Sand Creek at mouth near Commerce City, CO. (394839104570300)
  2. To collect quality-assurance and quality-control data to document the quality of analytical results.
  3. To compare analytical results of samples collected by pumping samplers (point samples)to samples collected by depth and cross sectional integrated methods.
