BACKGROUND:

Evaluation of regional geology allows broad, general definition of aquifer systems and their boundary conditions. Within this framework and with some knowledge of the stress on the system in time and space and of the hydrologic properties of the aquifers, a subjective decision can be made about the most advantageous locations for observation of long-term system behavior. Long-term water-level records are collected to evaluate the effects of climatic variations on recharge to and discharge from the ground-water systems in Colorado. This data base also serves as historical measure from which managers can identify the effects of development and predict future supplies.

OBJECTIVES:

Water-level data are collected to provide a long-term data base in order to gain an understanding of the general response of the hydrologic system to natural climatic variations and anthropogenic induced stresses. This understanding allows scientists to identify potential problems early enough to allow proper planning and management. In addition, this long-term data base provides historical data against which data acquired in areal studies can be analyzed. The data are used to assist managers determine and implement water use.
