Sustainable ground-water supplies for the Rogers Mesa area, Delta County, Colorado—A demonstration of development and evaluation of water-supply plans

Study Area: Delta County, Colorado
Period of Project: 2006-2007
Project Number: CM200
Project Chief: Ken Watts
Cooperator: Delta County

BACKGROUND:

Population growth in western Colorado, including Delta County, Colorado, is placing and will place additional demand on the area’s ground-water resources. As land is subdivided and more wells are used for individual and subdivision water supplies, the availability and sustainability of ground-water resources become more important considerations in the approval of water-supply plans for subdivisions. County land-use planners need objective criteria for establishing minimum requirements for subdivision water-supply plans, to ensure that the proposed water supply is physically adequate to meet the long-term water-supply requirements for proposed subdivisions.

OBJECTIVES:

To develop criteria and demonstrate an approach for compilation and analysis of hydrologic data that can be used by developers to prepare hydrologic analysis for subdivision water-supply plans. The information also can be used by the Delta County Land Use Department to evaluate the water-supply plans to ensure the availability and the sustainability of the proposed water supplies. The approach developed for this study will be applied to hypothetical subdivision water-supply plans for the Rogers Mesa area, in Delta County, Colorado, to demonstrate applicability and transferability to other areas in Delta County
