Ecological data collection at each site
included the collection of biological communities
and measurements of characteristics of riparian and
instream habitat conditions. Three taxanomic groups
-- fish, invertebrates, and algae -- were sampled
because they respond differently to different environmental
stresses. Physical habitat features are characterized
both instream and along riparian areas. An example
of some of these features include channel width,
reach length, bank width, flood-plain width, water
depth, water velocity, bed substrate, embeddedness,
canopy angle, channel aspect, bank angle, bank height,
bank shape, bank erosion, bank vegetation, and more.
A complete list and definition of terms is detailed
in the habitat protocols
(Meador and others, 1993b).
