DATA DICTIONARY #2 for Level 1 Habitat Data Sets
TRANSECT TABLE:
There is one record in the transect table for each transect visit.
Each transect visit is identified by an unique integer number, "Transect-id
number", that links the data in the transect table to the transect-point table.
The transect may not be the same location for each different visit to
the sampling reach. The data element "transect number" refers to the
sequence number of a transect visited on a particular date. The
difference between the two data elements is shown by the following
example. A sampling reach is visited on two different dates, and
three transects are identified during each visit. Assuming these
data are the only transects stored in the table, the data would be
identified as follows:
Date #1 Date #2
Transect #1 Transect #1
TCTID = 1 TCTID = 4
TCTNO = 1 TCTNO = 1
Transect #2 Transect #2
TCTID = 2 TCTID = 5
TCTNO = 2 TCTNO = 2
Transect #3 Transect #3
TCTID = 3 TCTID = 6
TCTNO = 3 TCTNO = 3

GEOMORPHIC CHANNEL UNIT TABLE:
These data elements are both time-variant and repeat multiple times
in each sampling reach for each time. Each record in the table describes
observations made of a single geomorphic-channel unit at a sampling reach on a
specified date.
The geomorphic-channel-unit (GCU) sequence number differentiates the
records for the same GCU type found at the same sampling reach on the same
date.

of the same type in the same sampling reach during a single visit. For
example, the first pool described for a given sampling-reach visit is assigned
sequence number '1'. The next pool described for the same sampling-reach visit
is assigned sequence number '2', and so on. The sequence number is
reset to one for a change of GCU, a change of sampling reach, or a different
visit date.

SEGMENT DATA TABLE:
All these data are time-invariant attributes of a stream segment.

Upstream-end river mile
COLUMN-NAME: USRMILE
TIME-VARIANT: no
STORAGE TYPE: real
DECIMALS: 1
UNITS: miles
DOMAIN: > = 0
The difference between USRMILE and DSRMILE is the curvilinear stream
length. Channel sinuosity for the segment is the ratio of curvilinear
length to straight-line length. See DSRMILE and SEGLENTH.

DECIMALS: 0
UNITS: feet above NGVD
DOMAIN: above NGVD > 0.0; below NGVD < 0.0
Elevation of the stream channel at the upstream end of the segment.
Used to calculate segment slope.
Downstream-end elevation

STORAGE TYPE: real
DECIMALS: 0
UNITS: feet above NGVD
DOMAIN: above NGVD > 0.0; below NGVD < 0.0
Elevation of the stream channel at the downstream end of the segment.
Used to calculate segment slope.
Downstream link
COLUMN-NAME: DSTRLINK
TIME-VARIANT: no
STORAGE TYPE: integer
DOMAIN: > 1.0
The magnitude of the stream link of the next downstream confluence.
It is an additive number describing the spatial relation of a given
stream segment in a basin. For example, if two tributaries come
together, the segment immediately downstream has a link of 2. If an
additional tributary empties into a stream with a link number of 2,
then the resulting downstream link is 3. In contrast to stream
order, if to 1st order streams come together they form a 2nd order
stream. If an additional 1st order stream empties into the 2nd order
stream, their resulting downstream order is still 2. Stream order
changes only if like ordered streams come together and does not
account for the magnitude of lower order streams that may enter into
it.
Sideslope gradient
COLUMN-NAME: SIDEGRAD
TIME-VARIANT: no
STORAGE TYPE: real
UNITS: feet/mile
DECIMALS: 2
DOMAIN: > 0.0
Sideslope or valley gradient is the mean of three measures of the
slope of the valley segment. Elevations are determined from contour
crossings at the basin boundary and the channel along a line
perpendicular to the stream segment. The difference between the
elevations is determined and divided by the distance, to determine
the side-slope gradient. These measurements are made at three
positions (either bank) representative of the sideslope gradient
along the segment, and the mean of these three measurements is
recorded.
Determined using a 1:24,000-scale map.

Stream-order method
COLUMN-NAME: ORDERMD
TIME-VARIANT: no
STORAGE TYPE: char
DOMAIN: reference list
reference list indicates computation method as well as source-map
scale by concatenating identifiers from the following two lists.
Computation-method list: visual, vector, raster
Source-map-scale list: :24k, :48k, :100k, :250k
For example, stream order determined by visual inspection of a
1:24,000-scale map woud be qualified by storing 'manual:24k' in
ORDERMD.
