High Plains Regional Ground Water (HPGW) Study

Irrigated Agricultural Land-Use Study - Ogallala Formation, central High Plains

Water samples from 30 randomly located monitoring wells completed in irrigated agricultural areas overlying the Ogallala Formation of the central High Plains area were collected. This study is part of the High Plains Regional Ground-Water Study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment Program. The samples were analyzed for about 120 water-quality constituents that included physical parameters, dissolved solids and major ions, nutrients and dissolved organic carbon, pesticides, nitrogen isotopes, and tritium. The purpose of this study was to Determine the occurrence and distribution of water-quality constituents in recently recharged ground water beneath irrigated agriculture in the central High Plains aquifer Ogallala Formation. (see interpretive report).

Figure 1 shows the spatial distribution of the sampling wells.
